Minimal Access & Bariatric Surgery

Minimal access surgery, or minimally invasive surgery as it is more commonly known, has become a gold standard in surgical practice, essentially due to its inherent advantages over conventional surgeries in many aspects.

At SLG, the department has a team of surgeons with great surgical skills and rich experience who use novel techniques to operate with less damage to the body than open surgery, reduce patient’s hospital stay, minimize scars, reduce blood loss and ensure quick return to everyday activities.

Minimal access surgery is performed with one or more small incisions instead of a large incision. The procedure entails insertion of an endoscope (tube) with a video camera on the end through a tiny incision (usually ¼” long) made in the body to enable the doctor to closely examine the organs. Surgical instruments can be inserted through additional small incisions to treat the problem. The camera sends back images which are magnified and viewed on a monitor by the surgeon to operate with great precision. When this procedure is used to operate on the abdomen, it is called laparoscopy; when used in the chest, it is called thoracoscopy; and when used in a joint, it is called arthroscopy.

TOP CENTRE FOR BARIATRIC SURGERY

Obesity is a complex disease involving an excessive amount of body fat. It isn’t just a cosmetic concern but a serious medical condition that increases the risk of other diseases and health problems. Generally, obesity is the outcome of inherited, physiological and environmental factors, combined with diet, physical activity and exercise choices.

People who are obese are at greater risk of developing a number of potentially serious health problems such as heart disease and strokes, high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, digestive issues, sleep apnea, and osteoarthritis.

Bariatric surgery, also known as weight loss surgery, is a minimally invasive procedure to modify the stomach and intestines. It performed to help patients who are severely overweight to lose excess weight in order to lower the risk of severe, life-threatening health problems. It is resorted to when diet and exercise haven’t worked and the weight is posing a serious threat to health.

Bariatric surgeries work either by limiting the amount of food a stomach can hold, reducing the body’s ability to absorb nutrients, or a combination of the two. The benefits of the treatment allow patients to enjoy improved health, a better quality of life and a longer lifespan. Talk to our experts at SLG for the best bariatric surgeries in Hyderabad.

Types of bariatric surgery

To meet specific needs of patients, there are different types of bariatric surgery. The most common types of bariatric surgery include:

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass: The most common method of gastric bypass, the procedure works by reducing the quantity of food that can be eaten at one sitting and decreasing absorption of nutrients. Typically, this surgery is not reversible.

Sleeve gastrectomy: The procedure involves removal of almost 80% of the stomach, leaving a long, tube-like pouch or sleeve. Since the stomach is smaller, it can’t hold as much food as before. It also reduces production of grehlin, the appetite-regulating hormone, which lowers the desire to eat.

Gastric band: In this procedure, an adjustable, inflatable band is placed around the top part of the stomach, effectively dividing it into two compartments with the smaller pouch above the band. Since less food is able to be stored, patients achieve fullness faster. After the meal, slowly the food passes through the opening of the band into the bigger part of the stomach, and digestion occurs normally. The band is reduced in size over time with repeated adjustments.

Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch: This is a two-part surgery in which the first step involves performing a procedure similar to a sleeve gastrectomy. The second surgery connects the end portion of the intestine to the duodenum near the stomach, bypassing a major part of the small intestine. What this achieves is limiting how much can be eaten due to the reduction in the size of the stomach and by promoting fullness faster. It also reduces the absorption of nutrients.

The type of weight-loss surgery that is best for you depends on your specific individual situation. Before deciding, the surgeon will take many factors into consideration, including body mass index, eating habits, other health issues, previous surgeries and the risks involved with each procedure. Consult SLG’s top specialists in weight-loss surgery to help decide which procedure best meets your needs.
